Administrative HistoryRobert Gilchrist was editor of the student magazine 'Alma Mater' while he was at University. He collected these letters in response to requests for articles for the magazine. Born in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, in 1888, Robert Niven Gilchrist graduated MA from Aberdeen in 1909 and 1910, and straightaway joined the Indian Civil Service. He was appointed Professor at the Presidency College, Calcutta, in 1911 and remained there until 1916 when he moved to be principal and professor of political economy at Krishnagar College, Bengal. In 1922 he returned to the mainstream civil service as labour intelligence officer and deputy secretary of the commerce department of the Government of Bengal. In 1934 he was joint secretary to the Government of Bengal and labour commissioner, Bengal, as well as holding other legislative posts. He served in the First World War, and in 1917 he married a fellow Aberdeen graduate in Calcutta. He retired in 1941, and was member of the Board of Management, Aberdeen General Hospitals, from 1951 to 1957. He died in Aberdeen in 1972.

Gilchrist collected these letters in response to requests for articles for the magazine. Includes letters from H. H. Asquith, J. M. Barrie, Hilaire Belloc, [William] Wilfred Campbell, Thomas Hardy, W. K. Leask, W. Robertson Nicoll, E. T. Reed, Sir Frederick Treves, and Sir William Watson. Also included is a printed list of guests for the Aberdeen Quincentenary Banquet, a selection of verse by William Wilfred Campbell entitled a 'Sheaf of Winter Lyrics', and a letter from Sir William Robertson Nicoll in which he offers some career advice to Robert N. Gilchrist.
