| Description | Robertson, Al., Peterhead: letter to Messrs Frederick Huth & Co., merchants, London. At Capt. Elorday's request he had examined a consignment of fish [probably casks of salt herring] which seemed unlikely to be fit for shipping if the passage was a long one. Advising underwriters that the fish be sold by public roup - perhaps in a more suitable market than this. 'There seems to be no remedy as the natural dampness of the Fish appears considerable when in the Cask exposed to the action of the atmosphere. About 7 or 8000 of these put into an excellent Granary in the best and [?] driest condition from the Ship are now a little humid and have been laid aside. There is nothing wrong with the Fish saving this, but were the 'San Francisco' to have a long passage they might get worse'. |
