Description | Letter from James Gregory to George Gregory which was written at Durham on a journey southwards; they left Edinburgh on Tuesday and were at Berwick on Wednesday and Newcastle on the morning he wrote the letter; he was accompanied by Andrew Crawford and his two sons, John and James; hopes to see him on Monday morning and asks him to find them lodgings in a hotel in his neighbourhood; he is travelling slowly as he has just had a bad attack of pneumonia which was treated by George Bell removing a pound of blood from him, a treatment that was so successful he did not miss one lecture; gives him great credit for convocating all Edinburgh graduates in or near London to accompany his deputation and suggests that they assemble below the King's windows as they will not fit in Carlton Palace; suggests the King will see him with admiration and gratitude when he realises George Gregory is offering his professional expertise to end this 'radical murrain' which threatens to overturn his government; he suggests the King will immediately give him a brevet of Major-General and that his 'black corps of Edinburgh graduates will be well caricatured', 13 April 1820. |
