Administrative HistoryJames Gregory was the only son of James Gregory (1638 - 1675) and his wife, Mary Jameson. He was professor of medicine at King's College in Aberdeen from 1725 to 1732, the first of several notable mediciners that descended from this side of the family.

He received his M.D. from Rheims in 1693 and practised medicine in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire from at least 1714 to 1733. He married Anna Chalmers, and two sons from this marriage, James Gregory (1707 - 1755) and John Gregory (1724 - 1773), succeeded him to the chair of medicine in King's College in Aberdeen.
