Title | Gregory family: papers of Donald Gregory (1803 - 1836): Letter from Donald Gregory to his mother, Isabella Gregory |
Date | 15 December 1826 |
Extent | 1 item |
Creator Name | Gregory, Donald (1803 - 1836), antiquary |
Description | Letter from Donald Gregory, Forten Barracks, Gosport, to his mother, Isabella Gregory, Aix en Provence, giving her news of John (1797 - 1869) who was on his way to Scotland and telling her that he is now part of the garrison of Portsmouth and is very comfortable there. He tells her of the situation in Portugal: of the news that the Refugees had invaded backed by Spain; that the King, after an appeal from the Portuguese ambassador, had decided to send a force of 5000; of the troop deployments; of the approval given by parliament to the King's actions and of his view that the force is likely to be an army of occupation and to watch Spain rather than fight. He remarks that they are expecting the regiment back from the West Indies and that the depot is going to the Isle of Wight as the amount of duty here is hindering drilling. He also tells her that he has just discovered that the Alisons only live 4 miles away and that Colonel McGregor of the 93rd is in Portsmouth waiting for fair winds to take him to Antigua, 15 December 1826. |
