Title | Gregory family: papers of William Gregory (1803 - 1858): Letter from William Gregory to his sister, Mrs Margaret Alison |
Date | 18 April 1838 |
Extent | 1 item |
Creator Name | William Gregory (1803 - 1858), professor of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh |
Description | Letter from William Gregory, Rothesay, to his sister, Mrs Margaret Alison, Edinburgh, in a light-hearted tone describing his time on Rothesay. He says that his health is improving and requests the view of William (Dr William Pulteney Alison) as to whether he would be well enough to lecture during the summer. He tells her of how dull Rothesay is without many friends there or guitar or piano and few books. He describes the "fashionables" there ('Lord McDawdle, Sir Humpey and Lady Lucretia Dubbs, the Hon. Capt. and Mrs Snobbs and Count Smalltork') but remarks that they are too grand to associate with him. He has found one friend staying nearby - a Lisette Scott (whom he later married). He remarks on her success at matchmaking and asks her to pass on his congratulations to Mrs J MacKenzie and Mrs Blackburn and to tell John Thompson to take one ounce of ______ acid for not replying to his letter, remarking "his conduct is most barbarous". He states that he thinks Russell's testimonials to be very poor and wishes he could say the same for his chances, 18 April 1838. |
