| Description | Memorandum, not dated (c. 30 April 1795), in hand of Duke of Atholl and signed by him. Contains alternative proposals should there be difficulty in passing the 'limited Bill of relief for the Isle of Mann this session of Parliament'. Includes clause in 'Hodge Podge' Act allowing certain amounts of tobacco, brandy and gin to be imported with duties payable in the Isle of Man as amounts which are currently lawfully imported are insufficient and leading to smuggling. He also outlines other measures which might be carried out without necessity of Parliamentary approval such as £200 p.a. to any successor to shortly retiring Lieutenant Governor, repayment to duke of cost of repairs to St. John's Chapel and to Manx officials to repair Castle Rushen, building of barracks if troops are to be stationed on the island, reform of Manx revenue department including dismissal or retirement of present receiver general, payment of promised grant to duke from Irish funds, or share of surplus island revenue, and passing of Game Laws. |
