TitleDuke of Atholl to Henry Dundas: memorandum
Date28 November 1789
Extent1 item
Description'Memorandum for Mr. Dundas from the Duke of Atholl.' Outlines certain measures which would be to the duke's interest in Scottish burghs and county of Perth, such as the establishment of a branch of the linen stamp office in Dundee for at least a trial period, the command of Custom House yacht to go to Mr. Kinloch [of Gourdie (Perthshire)] on death of Mr. Brown, the controller ship of customs to go to Patrick Maxwell of Dundee if resignation of Innes in favour of Hatburton as inspector of stamp duties is obtained by duke and approved by Mr.[George] Rose of the Treasury (cf. Atholl MSS.69(7) 104).

He also suggests various ways in which Dundas might obtain preferment for Perthshire voters or their families to induce them to support Major General James Murray (the duke's uncle) as M.P. for Perthshire and ends with a proposal that Dundas should write to Mr. Grenville [William W. Grenville (1759-1834), Home Secretary 1789-91] suggesting there be no alteration in the lieutenant governorship of the Isle of Man at present.

[Although endorsed 'Isle of Man', these jottings in the handwriting of the 4th Duke of Atholl concern Perthshire rather than Manx affairs, and may have been part of a longer document. The duke visited Henry Dundas at his country house, Dunira, in Perthshire, at the end of November 1789 to discuss Manx and Perthshire affairs according to Atholl MSS. 65 (7) 97, 99 and 104]
