| Description | Letter (duplicate), appended to MS 1160/57/2, from Francis Grant, Trelawny, Jamaica to Charles Gordon. Acknowledges letter of 27 April just received. Discusses decrees given by the Chancellor respecting some debt and reports on cane cutting now commenced; hogsheads may not be shipped before ‘momentous 26th July’ and much of the rum will have to be sold locally because of scarcity of ships. A special puncheon of old rum for personal use with some other items has been sent off on the 'Three Sisters'. An offer has been received for the Georgia estate from G. G. Barrett (£25,000 net). His opinion is requested.
Second letter, dated 4 July 1788, from Francis Grant to Charles Gordon. Gives own opinion of condition and value of Georgia estate to be considered along with Mr. Barrett’s offer mentioned in letter of 1 July. He would not part with it personally, but knows Gordon wishes to withdraw capital from Jamaica and is anxious for British security. Neighbouring Hyde Hall had been sold to Mr. Shirley of St. George’s for £62,000 local currency. His old friend Rook Clarke had just died. |
