In spite of a challenge from James Thomson of Portlethen, William Forbes of Monymusk was appointed civilist at King's College, Aberdeen, in 1741, and died in office in 1743.

Note on document ‘These extracts produced in the process concerning the election of Sir William Forbes of Monymusk to the office of Civilist, in order to show that the Regents were in use to vote in the election of the Civilists or Mediciners, upon which point the merits of Sir William’s election did turn.’
