| Administrative History | George Chalmers was born in 1671, a son of the manse at Gartly, Aberdeenshire. He was licensed to preach in 1695 and became chaplain to Lady Mar. He was ordained to Kilwinning, Ayrshire, in 1696 but demitted when he was appointed principal of King's College, Aberdeen, in 1717. He replaced Dr. George Middleton who had been deposed by the Presbyterians. He died in 1746 and was succeeded by his cousin John Chalmers. He married a daughter of George Campbell, professor of Divinity in Edinburgh, and their daughter Anne married the first Professor James Gregory, professor of Medicine at King's College. |
