Description | Letter addressed to Sir James Reid, The Chestnuts, Ellon from King George V, Buckingham Palace dated 30 August 1914. Thanks Reid for letter providing account of his son's illness. He has also received a letter from the Doctor on board the 'Collingwood' providing an account of the first two days illness. Notes that he seems to have been looked after well by Dr. Lomas and the nursing sister on board the hospital ship. He has shown his letter [Reid's] and that from the Doctor on board the Collingwood to Treves noting that 'it certainly seems to be a case of appendicitis'. The letter continues: 'Both the Queen and I have the greatest confidence in you and Marnoch and we are glad to think that he is in such safe hands and in such a comfortable Nursing Home as 5 Albyn Place which we know well and hope he is in the same room as _ had last year. We are both of the opinion that as soon as you and Marnoch consider that he is in a fit state, that the operation should be performed. He may get a return of the pain and therefore it would not be possible for him to return to his ship, which of course he wants to do and will fret until he is allowed to do so...Therefore I am sure the best thing will be to have the operation done as soon as possible...The Queen and I are most grateful to you for the prompt way in which you went at once to Wick to meet him'. |
