TitleDissection reports from the hospitals in the Severn and South-West districts, Winter 1810-1811
Datec. 1810 - 1811
Extent1 volume
Description'Dissection reports and cases of disease among the troops in the Severn and South West Districts during the winter quarter 1810/11'.

The volume begins with an abstract of the dissection reports, providing brief notes such as the name and regiment of the patient, the cause of death, and a brief summary of the findings of the post-mortem examination. Each entry is numbered and corresponds to the number given to the more detailed dissection reports later in the volume.

A table of the admissions and deaths in the troops in the Severn and South-West districts from the 6 November 1810-9 February 1811 is enclosed: 2,282 men were admitted in total during this period, the most prevalent cases being those of fever, catarrh and syphilis. A second table covering the same period is also included but shows the number and types of disease in each regiment.

The detailed reports record the condition of patients during their time in hospital, the treatment administered to them, the results of the postmortem examination and sometimes if any operations were performed. The signature of the surgeon responsible for carrying out the examination is provided at the end of each report.

Various other reports and correspondence are enclosed throughout the volume including (at the back of the volume):
'General Return of Men admitted, discharged and remaining at the Ophthalmia Depots Silsea, Aldwick and Bognor', 15 November 1807-24 December 1810. [A similar return is enclosed for the garrison at the Cape of Good Hope, 1807-1810.]
'Report of late sickness which happened in the Royal Eastern Middlesex Regiment'.
