Description | Record of cases, written in a different hand to McGrigor's, in the 88th Regiment. It is not made clear where these cases were treated but reference is made (see page 56, reverse side) to being on board a ship.
The daily progress of each patient is recorded together with the medicines prescribed to them. The pages are not numbered and there are no weekly remarks as in the majority of the other case books. This part of the volume covers the period from 17 May-19 October 1803. Notes have also been entered at the end of the volume beginning with a 'list of patients belonging to the 88th Regt from March 11th…', the pages being numbered from 1-62. This section dates from 11 March-6 April 1803 and some quite detailed case notes are provided for each patient. A typical entry can be found on page 20:
'McDonald: pulse quick, bad night, head-ach[e] much as yesterday, says he is very weak. T[ongue] beginning to become brownish, sweat much last night, was yesterday evening _ with singultus [hiccup], which was relieved by some _ Laudanum [tincture of opium] and _ Lavender, was _ with it again this morning and was relieved by the same remedy…'. |
