1937 28 October Reference is made to the death of Emeritus Professor Sir Ashley Mackintosh, K.C.V.O. (with printed tribute enclosed). Presidential address delivered by Mr. William Anderson: 'Some thoughts on our medical teaching system'. 25 November Annual Business Meeting with printed copies of annual reports by the Secretary (on behalf of the Council), Treasurer and Librarian. The election of office-bearers also took place with Dr. Edgar Smith elected President, Dr. J. Ross Mackenzie elected Vice-President, Dr. John Craig elected Secretary, Dr. Robert Richards elected Treasurer, and Dr. Middleton Connon elected Librarian. 2 December Representatives were appointed to attend the Local General Committee of the British Medical Association annual meeting to be held in Aberdeen in July 1939. Brief notes are provided on the various cases discussed at this meeting including that of a female patient with a swelling in the left lower abdomen, a man suffering from indigestion for 20 years and a patient who developed post-operative spreading gangrene of the skin of the abdomen. 18 December Acopy of the menu card for the Annual Founders' Commemoration Dinner is enclosed. This was held in the Palace Hotel and was attended by 57 members and 3 official guests [on the following page is a printed list of members]. 1938 3 February Paper presented by Dr. Ian Anderson on 'Disorders of the Parathyroid Glands - with illustrative cases' (half a page of notes provided on content of this paper). 7 April At this Council meeting the Librarian reported that the Library accommodation was becoming inadequate for the Society's books. At Society meeting of same date reference is made to the death of Dr. Anne Mercer Watson. [Along with Dr. Laura Sandeman, Dr. Watson was admitted as the first female member of the Society in 1905.] Society meeting: Dr. Susan Paterson gave an address on the therapeutic uses of progesterone. 5 May At this meeting of the Council it was proposed that £50 should be subscribed to the Local Guarantee Fund for the BMA Annual Meeting. A copy of a letter from Edmonds and Ledingham, Advocates, regarding a proposed nursing home on the Foresterhill site is enclosed and a reference is made in the minute to a letter, written on behalf of Miss Mackintosh, offering 'on more or less permanent loan, the portrait of her brother Sir Ashley Mackintosh'. Obituary of Sir Henry Gray enclosed. 3 November: Society meeting. Dr. J. W. Howie, Lecturer in Bacteriology, presented paper: 'Some Aspects of Streptococcal Infection'. 24 November: Annual Business Meeting. Report of Council, Statement of Accounts and Librarian's Report enclosed. Dr. James Ross Mackenzie elected President.
1939 2 February: Society meeting. Obituary of Dr. James Gordon Mackintosh enclosed. 24 April: Special meeting. Dr. H. E. Robertson, Pathologist to the Mayo Clinic addressed the Society on 'Pathogenesis and Complications of Duodenal Ulcer'. 1 June: Society meeting. Two obituaries enclosed for Dr. A. R. Galloway and Dr. Peggy Gordon. 19 September: Council meeting. 'The Council then discussed the measures to be taken during the War. It was intimated that steps had been taken to curtain and draken the Vestibule and the cloakroom...It was decided to recommend to the meeting of the Society that only the Annual Business Meeting should be held during the pariod of the War, except for an occasional clinical meeting should material for it be available'. 2 November: Council meeting. Question raised of whether it was proper to ask members to pay annual subscription in view of War. Printed notice to members enclosed announcing reason for Society calling for usual subscription. 23 November: Annual Business Meeting. Agreed that President and other office-bearers continue in office during present war emergency. Reports enclosed.
1940-1945 19 July 1940: Council agreed to let Society building to the Ministry of Home Security for billeting some of the chief personnel of the local services. Also resolved to remove pictures to a place of a greater safety with suggestion that Art Gallery be used for this purpose and made one of conditions of let. It was further agreed to suspend annual subscriptions for period of war. 26 November 1942: Obituaries of Dr. Middleton Connon, Librarian and Dr. Charles H. Usher enclosed. 25 November 1943: Reference to death of Dr. Cuthbert Cromar while on active service in the Middle-East. 15 June 1944: Council agreed that Society should hold its usual meetings in forthcoming session as far as possible and that subscriptions should be called for from the all members except those on active service. Also reported at Society meeting that the Civil Defence authorities had now vacated the Society's hall. 26 October 1944: Presidential Address delivered by Dr. J. Ross Mackenzie: 'Notes on the History of the Medical Profession in Art, Science, Literature and Learning'. 11 January 1945: Obituary of Dr. Peter Howie enclosed. Dr. Harold W. Fullerton addressed the Society on 'Recent Advances in Blood Diseases'. 1 February 1945: Detailed report of symposium on penicillin. 22 March 1945: Meeting of Benevolent Committee at which the Constitution and working of the Committee were reviewed. Printed summary of history of Committee enclosed. 7 June 1945: Dr. T. Morgan delivered talk: 'Some recent advances in therapeutics'. 25 October 1945: Dr. Alexander Lyall nominated to represent Society on committee to be formed by Education Authority to advise on pre-nursing courses for girls. Dr. Robert Richards delivered his Presidential Address: 'Corpus Hippocraticum' with reference to work of Francis Adams of Banchory, President 100 years ago.
